Organized and Braced for the Worst

I experienced the Flood of 2008 at the Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce, when more than 840 local businesses and thousands of residents were displaced by ten square miles of flooding in the downtown area. The damage was devastating and heartbreaking. This year, I had a very difference flood experience as a member of the Linn County team.

A Historic Day for Linn County

On Sept. 12, the Linn County Board of Supervisors approved raising the minimum wage in Linn County by a $1 a year for three years, effective Jan. 1, 2017. That means that by Jan. 1 of 2019, the minimum wage in the Linn County will rise to $10.25. The ordinance will apply within the unincorporated areas of the county and within any city or portion of any city within the county that does not enact a conflicting ordinance.

8 days in the life of a county Supervisor

The responsibilities of the Board of Supervisors are incredibly wide ranging. Each workday brings new opportunities and challenges. I realize it’s one thing to say that, but quite another to live it. So I’ve chronicled many of the meetings and issues that have filled a recent eight-day stretch on the job to give a very brief glimpse into the wide and wonderful world of being a county supervisor.
