James M. Houser was most recently elected to the Linn County Board of Supervisors in Nov. 2014 and was sworn into office Jan. 2, 2015. Jim represents District 1.

Jim previously served on the Board of Supervisors for 19 years from 1990-2010. He first served the office when he was appointed to fill a vacancy on the board in 1990. He was then elected to office in 1992 and served until 2010.

Jim is a member of the Justice and Public Safety Steering Committee for the National Association of Counties. He is also a member of the Iowa State Association of Counties’ (ISAC) Secondary Road Fund Distribution Committee and the U.S. Highway 30 Coalition of Iowa.

Jim serves on the boards for the Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency, Area Ambulance, and Workforce Development CEO Board. Jim also serves on the State Emergency Response Committee, Emergency Management Agency board, and the State/County Management Committee studying mental health and services for people with disabilities.

Jim is a member of the Democratic party, St. Jude’s Catholic Church, a six-year past board member of the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library, past Jefferson Band Parent member, a 41-year member of the Sheet Metal Local 263 and a 28-year member of the Antique Automobile Club of America-Cedar Rapids Region. Jim also serves as a Linn County Reserve Deputy Sheriff with 35 years of service and is 12-year member of the United States Selective Service Board serving Linn County.

A lifelong Cedar Rapidian, Jim completed apprenticeship training through Kirkwood Community College in 1977 as a Sheet Metal Journeyman and in 2011 became a licensed realtor in the State of Iowa.

Jim and his wife, Dr. Arleen Zahn-Houser, have been married for 27 years and have four children ages 20-26.
