2. How do I qualify for the veteran affairs relief program?

To be eligible for benefits an indigent veteran shall qualify by:

• Being a legal resident of Linn County for at least 30 days. Residency shall be defined to mean that a domicile has been established with the indigent to remain, which may be demonstrated, by a driver’s license, a lease, and enrollment of children in school, registration to vote, or other indicators of good faith residence.
• Having been discharged under Honorable, or General under Honorable Conditions. Veteran must also provide a copy of the DD-214 (discharge papers).
• Meeting Linn County Commission of Veteran Affairs income guidelines.
  • Family of 1: Income limitation $1,083.52 
  • Family of 2 or more: Income limitation $1,182.52

3. How do I enroll for VA medical benefits?

Contact Linn County Veterans Affairs at 319-892-5160 and we would be happy to help you apply for your VA medical benefits. You can also go to https://www.va.gov/health-care/  to learn more. 

4. Does the Department of Veteran Affairs have a 24-hour crisis line?

The Department of Veteran Affairs has a 24-hour crisis line. The number is 1-800-273-8255.

5. How do I get a ride to the Iowa City VA Hospital?

Veterans that have an appointment scheduled at the VA Hospital may call the DAV Transportation for a ride. Please call at least 24 hours ahead of the scheduled appointment. DAV VAN phone number is 319-339-7061. Rides are available Monday - Friday. 

The Corridor Medical Shuttle also offers rides to the VA Hospital and U of I Hospital at no cost for Veterans. Their phone number is 319-892-5170. Call to make a ride reservation no later than noon the day before the appointment. This service is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Cedar Rapids.

6. How do I get Veteran designation on my Drivers License?

If you meet the definition of Veteran from Iowa Code Chapter 35.1 or Retired Military, bring in your Retired Military ID and Driver’s License or the DD214 Military Discharge. We have forms available at our office. We can assist you with filling out the form and we will certify it. Take the certified form to the DOT station and present it along with your Driver’s License. This form can be done before you renew your license; however, if it is not set to expire the DOT may have a charge.
