• Q. How long do I have to transfer a vehicle I have purchased? • If the vehicle purchased is on an Iowa title, you have 30 days from the date of sale. If the vehicle purchased was on an out of state title you have 30 days from the date the vehicle entered the state of Iowa.
• Q. I'm moving to Iowa from out of state. What do I need to do to register my vehicle? • If there is not a loan against your vehicle, we will need your title and an application signed by all owners. • If there is a loan against your vehicle, supply either a photocopy of the title or the original registration from the other state, with a signed application by all owners. • If you are leasing your vehicle, we will need the out of state registration. If the out of state registration does not show the lessor's name and address, we will require a copy of the title (this can be faxed to 319-892-5549). We will need a Lease Tax Worksheet completed by the lessee. The application must be signed by a representative or agent of the lease company (which most lessees are.) • All owners are required to sign the application for Iowa title and or registration. • There is a 30-day time period from the date the vehicle(s) enters the State of Iowa to register without penalty.
• Q. I have lost my title. How do I replace it? • All owners must sign a Application for Replacement Certificate of Title. The information to complete the application can be found on your current registration. • There is a $25.00 charge and a 5-day waiting period before the new title can be released. The replacement title can either be mailed or picked up as indicated on the mailing instructions on the application. If the title is being picked up, a valid ID is required.
• Q. If I buy a car, where do I get the title transferred into my name? • We recommend that If you live in Linn County, you come into our office, temporarily located at 2500 Edgewood Road SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404. You can also send the necessary documents to 930 First Street SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404.
• Q. I have lost my validation sticker. How do I get a new one? • You can come to the Linn County Treasurer’s Office and bring the current registration. There is no charge for a replacement sticker.
• Q. Where do I go to get a refund on my plates? • You can bring your plates (registration is optional) to the Linn County Treasurer’s Office to initiate a “Claim for Refund”. The claim will be sent to the Department of Transportation. If the claim is approved, a refund will be mailed to you within four to six weeks.
• Q. Where do I get additional forms to complete the vehicle title process? • Additional forms can be acquired at the Linn County Treasurer's Office or click on Iowataxandtags.gov or see our forms page.
• Q. What are my payment options? • In person we accept check, cash, cashier’s check, money order, Visa, Mastercard or Discover card. A non-refundable Service Delivery Fee will be included on each credit card transaction. Online we accept Echeck, Visa, Mastercard or Discover card. A non-refundable Service Delivery Fee will be charged. The service delivery fee is a fixed convenience fee that is displayed for each transaction in advance of processing with the opportunity for you to escape without completing the transaction if you choose to do so. When paying by eCheck, the Service Delivery Fee is discounted (called a Cash Payment Discount). The exact amount due for your vehicle registration and the Service Delivery Fee is calculated when you reach Step 8 of the online service.
• Q. How do I change my mailing address? • If you have moved within or into Linn County, with your plate numbers and new address you can call 319-892-5500 or e-mail the information to Treasurer@linncounty.org.
• Q. Where do I apply for personalized or special personalized license plates? • You can pick up an application for personalized or special personalized license plates at the Linn County Treasurer's Office and mail it to The Iowa Department of Transportation, Office of Vehicle services, Records and Title Section, Park Fair Mall, P.O. Box 9278, Des Moines, IA, 50306-9278 or click on Iowataxandtags.gov and download the form. You could also check our forms page.
• Q. Where do I go to get a personalized or special personalized plate replaced if I have lost mine? • You can apply for duplicate plates and pay a $5.00 fee by bringing in your current registration to the Linn County Treasurer’s Office. You will receive a letter from our office letting you know when your replacement plate(s) have arrived.
• Q. I have lost one or both of my license plates. How do I get new ones? • For a $5.00 fee, you can receive a set of replacement plates by coming to the Linn County Treasurer’s Office. You will need your current registration and the remaining plate if you have only lost one plate.
• Q. If I put my vehicle in storage, do I have to buy the plates every year? • No, you can put the plates “in storage” at the Linn County Treasurer’s Office. This will eliminate any penalty when you decide to take the vehicle out of storage. However, in order to store the plates, they do need to be currently registered. Plates on trucks registered for a half year cannot be put in storage until the full year fee has been paid. The plates and registration need to be turned into the Linn County Treasurer’s Office so the State Motor Vehicle System can be updated and the registration stamped “STORED.”
• Q. When I take my vehicle out of storage do I get free plates to put back on the vehicle? • If you take the vehicle out of storage during the same registration year that you put the vehicle in storage, you will get a free set of plates. If the current year has expired, you will pay a full-year’s fee in order to get your plates out of storage, and plates are included as part of this fee. Remember to bring your registration that was stamped "STORED."

What does the name connector "and", "or", or "and/or" mean on the face of my vehicle title as it relates to selling my vehicle? • The name connector “and” means that all owners listed on the face of the vehicle title will have to sign as seller when the vehicle is sold. • The name connector “or” means that only one owner listed on the face of the vehicle title will have to sign as seller when the vehicle is sold. • The name connector “and/or” means that all owners listed on the face of the vehicle title will have to sign as seller when the vehicle is sold.
• Q. Do I still have to turn my plates in when I know I will not receive a refund? • Yes. The plates need to be cancelled off of the State Motor Vehicle System.
