Information about Voter Registration

Please Click here for information about Voter Registration on Election Day

Voter information and history is public record.

WARNING: You can be convicted and fined up to $7,500.00 and/or jailed for up to five years for false information.

How you can become a registered voter:

  • By Mail
  • In Person
  • With the Department of Transportation Office (While you are updating, renewing or getting your driver's license.)
  • With a State Public Service Agency

There is no residency requirement for registering to vote.  To be included in the elections register for a specific election, you must be registered 11 days before a School, City or Special Election, and 10 days before a Primary or General Election.

You may register at 17˝, but you must be 18 years old before or on Election Day, be a resident of Iowa and a United States citizen in order to vote.

You must be registered to vote in the county where you live. Registrations are not transferable from county to county.

You may use the voter registration form found in the phone books.  You must sign the form before mailing.

Send your registration or change of address to:

Linn County Elections

PO Box 1328

Cedar Rapids, IA 52406-1328

You may also register in person at the Linn County Elections Office at Linn County West at Westdale Mall in Cedar Rapids.

Voter Registration forms are also available at the City Clerk’s Office located in each City Hall.

Residents may also register at the Iowa Department of Transportation offices and with State Agencies that provide public assistance.

Making Changes to Your Voter Registration

If you are already registered to vote, but have moved within Linn County, you must file a change of address. You may use the same form found in the phone books or the Secretary of State’s website to file your change of address. The same form is also used for any other change to your registration.

You may change your address at the polls on Election Day if you're already registered to vote. You must go to your new polling place to change your address on Election Day. Call the Auditor’s Office to determine where your new polling place is. Our Phone number is 319-892-5300.

Filing the change of address by the deadline for registration will prevent delays at the polls.

Political Party Affiliation

You may register with or without a party affiliation. However, if you wish to vote in the June Primary election, you must declare a party. There are currently only 2 recognized parties in the state: the Democratic and Republican parties. Iowa has closed Primaries in which the voter must declare their party affiliation on or before Election Day and will be given only that party’s ballot.

Losing Your Voting Rights

A person who has been convicted of a felony or convicted of an offense classified as a felony under federal law will be disqualified from registering to vote and from voting.

Please contact the Governor’s office at 515-281-6611 for more information.

Citizenship Restoration Law

Please click here to read some of the FAQ's prepared by the Governor's Office regarding the law which was passed on July 4th, 2005. This law allows those persons who have been convicted of a felony, but have served their time, to register and vote.
