Interior view | Woodpecker Lodge is located on a scenic hill top in Pinicon Ridge Park - a regional destination just west of Central City, IA. Opened in 1966, this facility was accompanied by the Pinicon Ridge Dam, Observation Tower and Flying Squirrel Campground as the Conservation Department's major park developments of the mid-1960s. This was the first lodge available for reservations by the public on a year-round basis - and immediately became popular because of the adjacent lighted sledding hill - which, 40-some years later - still makes for great winter activity destination! It has been renovated several times over the past decade, with plans for additional work to be completed in 2009-2010. The unique triangular shape, and scenic vistas off the patios of this lodge serve only to enhance the lure to this location for historic family gatherings, youth group activities and neighborhood events.
This lodge has NO AIR-CONDITIONING and is heated with a forced-air furnace in the cooler months. Sheltered (indoor) capacity is considered to be 75 people, with comfortable seating banquet style for 50-60 people. Fair-weather capacity (utilizing adjacent patio area) is considered to be around 250 people. Woodpecker lodge has several nearby special park features within walking distance: sand volleyball court (adjacent), lighted sledding hill (adjacent), 72' landmark observation tower (.25 miles), watercraft concession (.3 miles), hiking trails (adjacent), playground (.5 miles), and much more!
