Colonel John Stuelke has been a deputy with the Linn County Sheriff’s Office since July 16, 1982. He spent the first five years of his career working in the jail. In 1987 he bid to the road patrol and worked for one year as an ASAP deputy, stopping and arresting drunk drivers. In 1990, he was chosen to be one of the first two Linn County Sheriff’s Office canine handlers and was assigned a Belgian Melanois named Chabo. Chabo was the first bomb dog in the state of Iowa and was used to search for explosives along with being cross-trained for tracking, building searches and handler protection. In December of 1997, Colonel Stuelke was promoted to Sergeant and moved into the jail as a Shift Supervisor. In December of 2000, he was promoted to Lieutenant and worked in the jail as a Shift Commander. In September of 2002, he was assigned as the Assistant Jail Administrator and then promoted to Captain in June of 2003. In December of 2004, he was transferred to take command of the Civil Division and in January 2008, was given the additional duties of General Services Commander. In January 2009, he was appointed to the position of Chief Deputy with the rank of Colonel. Colonel Stuelke is a native of Marion and graduated from Marion High School in 1980. In 1994 he graduated with an Associates Degree in Law Enforcement from Kirkwood Community College and in 1998 he received his Bachelors Degree in Public Administration from Upper Iowa University. In 2010, Colonel Stuelke graduated from the 243rd Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. He is married to Lesia and has five children; Megan, Brittany, Sean, Ian and Jonathan. He is proud that Megan serves in the United States Air Force and that Sean served four years with the United Stated Marine Corp. In his spare time Colonel Stuelke served 12 years as a councilman and 4 years as mayor in Center Point, the community he has lived in since 1983. He also enjoys spending time with his family and taking part in church activities.
