Captain Greg McGivern began his career with the Linn County Sheriff’s Office in July of 1989 where he was assigned to the Correctional Division. In August of 1992 he was chosen to be on the Immediate Response Unit (SWAT Team) where he was the team’s sniper for several years; he is currently the Team Leader. He transferred to the Patrol Division in 1996 and was later promoted to Sergeant in 1999. He worked as a Sergeant in the Jail, Patrol and Criminal Divisions. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 2006 and was assigned to the Patrol Division as an Assistant Commander. He was promoted to Captain in August of 2017 and is currently the Criminal Division Commander. In addition to his duties as Criminal Division Commander and Team Leader of the IRU Team, Captain McGivern is the Assistant Bomb Team Commander and an instructor for A.L.I.C.E. building searches, A.L.E.R.R.T. traffic/felony stops and precision driving. Captain McGivern is a graduate of Benton Community High School and has an Associate of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from Kirkwood Community College and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Administration from Upper Iowa University, and is a graduate of Northwestern University School of Police Staff and CommandDuring the course of his career, Captain McGivern has been the recipient of the Life Saving Award and the Medal of Valor.
