QUESTION Can I build a garage or shed on my property in rural Linn County?
ANSWER Garages and sheds are considered accessory structures on property zoned for residential use. Accessory structures can be built on property that has a principal permitted use (house). The garage must maintain all required setbacks and typically cannot be located closer to the road than the principal permitted structure. Any garage or shed over 120 square feet requires building permits, please see Residential Guidelines for Attached Garages and/or Residential Guidelines for Detached Garages. Contact the Linn County Department of Planning and Development for details at (319) 892-5130.
