Demolition of Flood-damaged Buildings to Begin Monday
in Rural Linn County

(Cedar Rapids, IA – November 6, 2009) — Demolition work will begin Monday for 18 sites in rural Linn County that were damaged by the 2008 flood. Central States Contracting, Inc. from Cedar Falls was awarded the contract for $272,180. Linn County will be reimbursed for the demolition costs by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (90 percent) and the State of Iowa (10 percent).

The demolitions are part of the 403 Imminent Threat Demolition Program. This program provides funding to remove structures that are in imminent threat of partial or complete collapse or that are deemed a threat to public health. Property owners retain ownership of the land at these sites and may rebuild structures as long as floodplain, zoning, and building requirements are met.

This is a voluntary program. The 18 property owners have agreed to have these structures removed. The demolitions are expected to be complete by Thanksgiving. Approximately 14 additional qualifying structures will be removed in a second phase of this program at a later time.
