Linn County Receives $5 Million in Local Option Sales Tax in FY10

Dollars will reimburse flood-related losses

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA — Linn County finance officials reported today that Linn County has received $5 million in fiscal year 2010 from the local option sales tax passed by voters in March 2009 and implemented April 1, 2009. The $5 million is revenue from the tax for the unincorporated areas of Linn County.

In accordance with the resolution passed by the Board of Supervisors in February 2009, the $5 million will be used to reimburse Linn County’s general fund for flood-related losses.

During the remaining four years of the local option sales tax, ninety percent of the revenue from the tax for the unincorporated areas of Linn County will be used for construction and maintenance of Linn County secondary roads and bridges and up to 10 percent will be used for conservation maintenance and improvements. Linn County expects to receive $5.7 million from the tax in fiscal year 2011.

“The local option sales tax is working in Linn County thanks to voters who passed the measure,” said Linn County Board of Supervisor Chairwoman Linda Langston. “Linn County is using the tax revenue wisely to help us recover from the flood and to improve the quality of Linn County’s secondary road system.”

The local option sales tax expires June 30, 2014. For a list of secondary road projects scheduled to be funded by the local option sales tax, visit www.linncounty.org/engineer.
