LINN COUNTY COVID-19 STATUS UPDATE

May 7, 2021

COVID-19 Vaccine Information

As of April 5, all Iowans age 16 and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Vaccine supply has increased significantly, and anyone that wants a vaccine should get their vaccine now. Getting a vaccine is easy, and there are many local places to get a vaccine.

COVID-19 Vaccine Information Sessions hosted by The Iowa Department of Public Health, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, and University of Iowa were held on April 17, 19 and 24. The sessions were offered in English and Spanish, and are now also available in French and Arabic. The recordings are available at https://www.iowacovidinfo.org/recordings.

For help with getting a vaccine:

  • Most local vaccine providers are offering walk-in appointments.
    • Check with the pharmacy or clinic first to ask about walk-in availability.
  • Find a vaccine provider at Vaccines.gov
  • Call 211 or 800-244-7431. Vaccine navigation services are open to anyone 16 years old or older. Translation services are available.

Linn County will receive approximately 4,900 doses of COVID-19 vaccine the week of May 10. This is less than the full allocation that was offered to Linn County Public Health from the Iowa Department of Public Health. Linn County Public Health did not take the full allotment of vaccine for the coming week due to decreasing demand for vaccine, and due to many local providers receiving large amounts of federally allocated vaccine.

In the April 30 COVID-19 Status Update, guidance for fully vaccinated individuals was shared. Linn County Public Health continues to receive questions regarding the prevention measures that are needed for fully vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. To learn about choosing safer activities for fully vaccinated and unvaccinated people, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for fully vaccinated individuals or view the graphic below:

COVID-19 Prevention

On May 4, the Iowa Department of Public Health announced two confirmed cases of the COVID-19 variant SARS-CoV-2 B.1.617. This variant is also referred to as the India variant because it was first detected there. B.1.617 is not designated as a “variant of concern,” indicating that there is not currently evidence of increased transmissibility or more severe disease caused by this variant. However, the emergence of new variants underscores that it remains critical for Iowans to continue the mitigation efforts that we know work to slow the spread of COVID-19, including getting a vaccine, wearing a mask, practice social distancing, washing hands frequently, staying home when sick, and getting tested for COVID-19 if you have been exposed to or have symptoms of COVID-19.

Mask mandates remain in place in Linn County. Scientific data shows mask wearing reduces new infections of COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to update scientific data on the prevention benefits of masking to prevent the spread of COVID-19.  The Linn County mask requirement can be found on the Linn County website. The City of Cedar Rapids mask mandate was updated May 3, and is available on the City’s website.
